I live in Victoria, BC, Canada. I am a dog groomer by day and a writer/gamer/reader by night. For almost fifteen years, I was involved with the SCA and taught medieval dance. Since 2004, I have attended the Faerie worlds festival yearly, keeping fantasy alive in my heart until they closed it down in 2022. With four books published and working on more, I hope they will draw you away from the modern world and into a land of intrigue and fantasy, where magic, dragons, shifters, vampires, and kings roam the lands.
“Welcome Randie Anne Dey! We're excited to have you here today. Let's start with a question about your writing preferences. What is your favourite genre to write and why?”
Thank you for having me! My favourite genre to write is fantasy. I love that you can create what you want and are not restricted. Oh, I need a monster that walks through shadows. I can make one.
“That sounds awesome! Now, let's talk about writer's block. It can be a challenge for many authors. How do you handle writer's block?”
I have been very lucky. If one book is giving me the block, I have 12 others I can play with.
“That's a great strategy! I like that. Moving on, where do you draw inspiration from for your stories?”
My Dreams. Most of my stories come from them. I wake up, put my headset on and voice to text them in run-on sentences and bullet points. Then I play with them afterwards and expand them.
“That's a unique approach! I wish I had the thought process to do the same. Let's discuss the importance of book reviews. How do you view their significance?”
Very. I think reviews help the reader decide on whether the book is a match for them and the author as to what might need to be changed in their writing going forward. Not every book is going to be for everyone, but as a general, they help.
“Absolutely! I certainly take all reviews on board and use them as a tool to grow. Now, for a fun question: cake or ice cream?”
Ice Cream all the way, but I rarely eat it.
“I myself enjoy the occasional bowl of ice cream. Moving on, how do you handle criticism?”
Pretty easy but also I've been lucky. I haven’t had much. Everyone seems to love my books.
“That's great. Now, what inspired you to start writing in the first place?”
I have been writing since 2000. Just only recently published because friends pushed me into it.
“That's wonderful to hear! Let's discuss your writing routine. Do you have a specific routine or do you write whenever you can?”
I don't have one. I write when I can or have free time.
“That's a flexible and organic approach. And what is your favourite motivational phrase?”
Give me a firm place on which to stand and I will move the earth.
“That's a powerful phrase indeed. Before we wrap up, do you have any advice for aspiring writers?”
Just write what's in your heart and go for it.
