I am an Australian Author from Perth, Western Australia. My love for reading started when I was very young. Enjoying stories like Harry Potter or Deltora Quest; that is where my love for fantasy derived from. I then went on to read Stephen King and Clive Barker in my later years, bringing in my love for the horror and thriller genre.
For my own stories, I love to write what I feel is right for the story that I want to tell. I don't stick to just one genre, but go through many different styles and genres that I feel in my heart that I want to tell. I have written horror, fantasy, dark fantasy, romance and YA. All stories that come to mind without holding back. I believe if something needs to be dark and violent, then don't hold back if it is relevant to the story. Tell the story you want to tell and don't be afraid of what others may think. Write for you and no one else. Everyone who reads your stories in the end will either love or hate the journey.
“I'd like to start by asking how much research you typically do for your books.”
It really depends on the project. I do some research on specific words and different meanings. However, mostly, I have to admit that I just make shit up as I go. It is all dependent on the type of story I’m working on and how factual it needs to be.
“Interesting! And speaking of the stories you write, what is your favorite genre to write and why?”
Definitely Horror/Dark Fantasy. I love being able to let my imagination run rampart. It allows me to delve into some truly dark and captivating narratives.
“Cats or dogs?”
Without a doubt, I'm a cat person. 100%
“In the process of creating your books, what was one of the most surprising things you learned?“
How creative I truly can be.
“Does writing energize or exhaust you?“
Energizes me. Any form of creating is a true example of my expression. It can sometimes be hard, but mostly, I love it to the core.
“And how do you handle writer's block?”
Music. I have playlists. Honestly, I don't really have much writer's block. I have so many stories and visions that run through my mind, and most of them correlate to the music I'm listening to.
“Another hard one. Sweet or Savory?”
Definitely sweet.
“Where do you draw inspiration from?“
My mind and music, mostly. But also, I draw inspiration from watching various movies and reading different books. New ideas branch from what I love.
“Criticism? How do you handle it?”
Criticism is good no matter what. When you understand that art is subjective, then you'll be easier on yourself. Not everyone will love your work, but as long as you enjoy being in your worlds, that is all that matters.
“And how do you prioritize your tasks?”
I don't, I just write. I don't have deadlines as they bring unnecessary stress, so I focus on the joy of creating. As long as I get one word down, or do something creative, then I've accomplished something.
“That's a refreshing approach. What inspired you to become a writer?”
My love for storytelling has been a lifelong passion. I’ve always been fascinated by literature since I was young, and I’ve always wanted to share my stories with the world.
“Book reviews play a significant role in the literary world. How important are they to you?”
They are important to allow readers to see what others think. And for writers to look over and know what they can do for their next novel. Not everyone will leave a good review. Not everyone will like what you create.
“Can you share your writing routine with us?”
I just sit down and write. Mostly, I write on my 45-min lunch break. If I do that, I know I can go home and do what I want as I've already accomplished at least 1 page for the day.
“Now, another fun one. Tacos or burgers?”
Tacos
“What advice would you give to aspiring writers?”
Write because you want to tell stories. Don't look to make money.
“Finally, what have been the most rewarding and challenging aspects of self-publishing, and how have you navigated these challenges?”
The most rewarding, I guess, would be... the fact that I can write any story how I want without someone telling me to cut certain things out ETC. I have full control of my art. It can be hard sometimes, as the market is huge. But, I love telling stories and I'm impatient. I've tried to traditional route, but I don't write to market. Formatting and learning to do a majority myself was a challenge, but one I loved. I enjoy learning and will hopefully continue to do so.
