Did I mention recent number one bestseller in extreme sport? Congratulations. So, from extreme sport to Romantasy, what inspired you to write Shadows of the Dragon?”

Dragons, I’ve adored them for as long as I can remember. Originally, I was going to write a spin-off to the Kai Flint series, but Ayr would have been a well-established character by then. So I went back to the beginning.

“Fascinating! Now, let’s hear a bit about the main characters. Why did Ayr pick Azura? What makes her special?”

Actually, Ayr didn’t pick Azura. In this world, it’s the dragon who chooses the rider. And Azura saw something special in Ayr, something she believed would make him a great rider. It’s a bond that can’t be forced or predicted.

“That’s amazing and probably something I should have known, considering how many times I’ve read the book! Onto the Seminary. What’s your favourite challenge that Ayr and Azura face there?”

Probably the Catalyst. Either that or Bonnie. She’s an Easter egg to another series and who doesn’t like surprises? 😉

“Bonnie was certainly interesting and unexpected. Without revealing too much, can you tell us about Elanor Sunfire and her dragon, Evor? How do they fit into the story? What does she see in Ayr and Azura?”

Ah, Elanor, having once believed that Azura would be her dragon, sees potential in both Ayr and Azura. As a senior rider at the Obelisk, knowing what Ayr's father did, she is determined to guide Ayr onto a different path than his father, ensuring he avoids making the same mistakes. The fact that Evor is promised to Azura strengthens Elanor’s resolve to steer them in the right direction.

“And what can you tell us about Elanor's dragon, Evor?”

The black menace. Evor is old, large and wise. Promised to Azura for decades, Evor is that watchful guardian and strong mentor that Azura needs.

“Fascinating! Now, let's delve into the curse of Ayr's family name. How does it affect his journey to becoming a rider?”

Dalton Ashbourne (Ayr's father) was stripped of his dragon and started a war with the Commonwealth. Consequently, only one Ashbourne is treated as a normal member of society. And as for Ayr, the other recruits. Even their dragons, pretty well everyone that still has a sour taste in their mouth regarding the Ashbourne name, want him dead. Especially when they find out he's Dalton's kid.

“It sounds like there's a lot in store for readers! What can readers look forward to in future books?”

So much. I'll be dipping more into the romantasy genre, working on my craft and improving. I want to become a great fantasy author.

“More books for me to read. Can you give us a glimpse into the world where Shadows of the Dragon takes place?”

The Commonwealth is a region in my larger and all-encompassing fantasy world. It’s a classic high fantasy setting. The Seminary and the Obelisk are set amongst the hills and only accessible by a couple of southern routes. Otherwise, it's all about the dragons. I am still building the world and can't wait to build the next map.

“Sounds intriguing! Now, let’s talk about some secrets in the book. Are there any hidden gems that readers should keep an eye out for?”

Ah, secrets are my specialty! If you know, you know. 😉 I won’t spoil the surprises, but let’s just say there are a couple of intriguing secrets waiting to be discovered.

“Ooh, very mysterious! Now, one aspect that caught my attention was Ayr’s attraction to the older woman. Can you elaborate on this dynamic?”

He doesn't think she's older to begin with. It also helps that Azura is basically rewriting his brain chemistry because she is promised to Evor. But are you really going to say no to a good-looking lady when there's forced proximity?

“Perhaps Elanor should teach him some self-control. Moving on. What sets Shadows of the Dragon apart from other dragon rider fantasy novels?”

So those in the romantasy genre are slow to start. SOTD is not. I've worked on Ayr's and Azura's relationship. As the series progresses, there will obviously be higher stakes, a more expansive world and just more chaos.

“Fantastic! Now, can you give us a hint about what we can expect in future books of the Ashbourne Saga?”

Explosiveness! More spice! Chaos! The story will continue to escalate, with higher stakes, unexpected twists, and new challenges for our beloved characters to face.

“That sounds absolutely thrilling! What inspired your character/dragon names?”

I like to keep things simple. I use objects around me for some, but others I will just placeholder until I can think of something cool that fits.

“*cough* Recommendations. Ok, before we wrap this up, what was the most challenging part of writing Shadows of the Dragon?”

Not wanting to blow my load too early with Ayr and Elanor. They are still very much at the start of their journey. Maybe book two.
