I'm Heather. Renee — a dark romance and erotic horror author who loves writing twisted, taboo stories that make you stop and ask, “What the hell did I just read?” Nothing is off limits in my world. If it’s dark, dirty, or disturbing, I’m probably writing it.
I also write under the pen name Emmy Crimson, where I add a supernatural twist to the madness.

Thanks so much for having me, Ajay! I’m excited to be here!
“Let’s dive right into the deep end. What inspired you to start writing spice?”
Honestly? I wanted to write what I wanted to read.
“That is the most valid answer I’ve ever heard. Write the smut you want to see in the world, people! Now, your characters—whew!—the chemistry is off the charts. How do you create that magic between them?”
I just write and see where it goes. I like to go with the flow.
“So, you're telling me it’s all vibes and vibes alone?”
Exactly.
“Speaking of vibes—let’s get spicy. What’s your process for crafting those steamy scenes?”
🤣Oh boy… I’m very much a daydreamer. I’ll visualize it and then write it out.
“In my opinion that is the only way. Okay, real talk: how do you handle feedback—or straight-up criticism—on the explicit content?”
I try not to respond to people directly… especially when I get comments like, “How can you write something like that?” Sometimes I’ll post something in response, but I never call anyone out.
“Oof, those pearl-clutchers. They're exhausting. Props to you for keeping it classy! Any challenges you face writing spicy romance compared to, say, non-spicy genres?”
Actually, it’s the opposite. I struggle to write other genres if they don’t have spice.
“A woman after my own heart! I've tried many times. My favourite is when they say just pull it back a little… How? How do you make your romances feel authentic and emotionally compelling?”
I like to write in POVs. It gives me a connection to the characters as I write them.
“Yes! Deep dives into both heads = double the tension. We love to see it. I haven’t mastered the art of writing in dual or multiple POVs yet. However, I do have a series coming that requires it. Let’s talk about my “favourite” topic, censorship. Have you ever faced backlash for your content?”
Oh, yes. I’ve been banned from Amazon. Not everyone will publish my books in ebooks or paperback, but I’ve found ways around that. I’m slowly getting my books into print.
“Damn, the system tried it, but you said: “Watch me.” Love that resilience. Let’s help the next generation of spice-bringers: what advice do you have for aspiring authors wanting to dip into the hot stuff?”
My advice would be to remember...
“To remember what? Don’t leave us hanging!”
🤣 Just remember why you're writing it. Keep it real and write what excites you.
“Plotter or pantser?”
Pantser! I make notes if something pops into my head, but mostly I just write and see what happens.
“What do you need in your writing space to stay focused?”
As long as I have my computer, snacks, and drinks, I can stay in my little corner and write forever.
“Snacks are sacred. Speaking of…. Favorite writing snack?”
Hershey kisses!
“Literal fuel for romance. Love it. How do you celebrate finishing a book?”
I don’t do anything special—I just say “yay!” and move on to the next one.
“Feels. The grind never stops! What’s your writer kryptonite?”
Soft and sweet stories. Most of mine are darker. I’d love to write soft and gentle someday.
“Do you Google yourself?”
Nope.
“How much research goes into your books?”
It depends, but I do a good amount when I need to know more about a topic.
“Favorite genre to write?”
Dark romance—it comes naturally to me.
“Write what you know. Describe yourself in one word?”
Determined.
“Biggest surprise from writing?”
How therapeutic it can be.
“YES! Does writing energize or exhaust you?”
Energize, for sure.
“How do you handle writer's block?”
I either go into reader mode or free write in a new doc. That’s how I get a lot of my short stories.
Favorite 90s or early 00s song?”
Barbie Girl by Aqua.
“ICONIC. You just unlocked a core memory. Where do you draw inspiration from?”
Anything and everything. Sometimes ideas just pop into my head.
“How do you handle criticism?”
I listen, then give myself time to process before responding or making decisions.
“Death row last meal—what’s on the plate?”
Pizza, fried chicken, and mac and cheese. Full gluten!
“Going out in a blaze of gluten glory. I respect it. How do you prioritize tasks?”
I’m working on it! I tend to help others before myself, but I’m trying to stick to a new schedule.
“What inspired you to write?”
I always wanted to read something different. After encouragement from a friend, I decided to write it myself.
“Book reviews—how important are they to you?”
I go back and forth. It’s nice to hear when people like your book, but I understand not everyone’s comfortable sharing.
“Writing routine?”
I don’t really have one—I just write as much as I can.
“If you could be any animal?”
A bird. So I can fly and hang out in the clouds.

Be yourself. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t write what you want.
“And what’s been the most rewarding—and most challenging—part of self-publishing?”
The freedom to write whatever I want. The challenge? Not all platforms accept my books. But I’ve created my own website to work around it.
