I write high and low fantasy stories packed with magic, grit, and unexpected heart. My work often balances humor and deep world-building, with a love for small details that grow into reader favorites (like a certain skeleton fish named Tropic). I’m the author of Mathsmagica: Light’s Shadow and am currently working on my next novel, Sun Catchers. When I'm not writing, I'm usually dreaming up new worlds or plotting how to outwit my own characters.
“Welcome Daniel, good to have you back again! Let’s kick things off with a fun one: What’s a tiny, seemingly insignificant detail in one of your books that actually means a lot to you?”
When writing Mathsmagica: Light's Shadow, I realized that in so many stories, characters have pets or companions — and thought, "Hey, why don't I get one for mine?"
One evening, while walking the dog with my wife, I randomly came up with the most brilliant idea: why not make a pet skeleton fish? And that's how Tropic came to life.
Apparently, Tropic grew so strong on my readers that I even got a private message from someone who printed out a ton of Tropic stickers. Before you ask — yes, I absolutely loved it.
“Love that! A pet skeleton fish — pure genius. Alright, next question: describe your writing style, but as a type of weather.”
Calm before the storm.
“Ominous! Care to explain?”
Because sometimes you're just chilling... and then buildings start falling.
🤣 “Sounds about right. Now, imagine one of your characters wrote a brutal review of you as their author. What would they complain about?”
Sova from Mathsmagica probably hates me in his guts.
He's this super strong character, but every time he reaches a real "boss fight," it’s a carefully prepared stage just for him — full of traps, twists, and sabotage. And to make it worse, Director Astron keeps interrupting him while he tries to talk.
Sova's so pissed at me for this. 🥺
“Poor Sova! (Or maybe... not?) Switching gears — what's a genre or type of story you secretly want to write someday, even if it's totally different from your current books?”
There’s actually a sports genre book I really want to write. I already have the core idea in my head — and my fingers are itching a little every time I think about it.
But Sun Catchers comes first.
“Ooh, I’m intrigued! Alright, next one: a character challenges you to a duel. What's your absurd weapon of choice?”
My MacBook.
No joke.
I'll rewrite that cocky prick into a fluff-ball with massive anti-gravity issues so they’ll float helplessly to the moon.
Goodbye, sucker.
🤣 “Brutal and creative! Last one: pick a sidekick — a talking sword with commitment issues, or a skeleton fish who thinks they're a pigeon?”
Most readers of Light's Shadow will probably think of Gash and say skeleton fish. And honestly... I'll go with the talking sword at first.
Wait. No.
On second thought, I'd rather be walking my cute-as-hell skeleton fish pet.
Yeah. Skeleton fish it is.
“Best answer ever. Thanks for hanging out, Daniel — and for the chaos, the laughs, and the skeleton pigeons.
