"From backyard kingdoms to fantasy worlds, writing was always the real adventure.”
I have been writing since I was in third grade. My love for fantasy developed when my dad showed me the animated version of The Lord of the Rings. I also enjoyed many fantasy MMOs in my childhood, like Asheron's Call, World of Warcraft, and RuneScape. The other neighborhood kids and I would create make-believe kingdoms out of our yards, make armor out of whatever we had lying around, and battle for more territory. I personally became an emperor of roughly 1.5 acres when I was nine years old and, for the summer, enjoyed the title and the privileges that came with it. The Petopian Empire began to decline because I had to go back to school and everyone else either got bigger than me or tired of being a vassal to a nine-year-old. Also, that was around the time Airsoft became affordable.
“Welcome back, everyone! Today, I'm thrilled to be joined once again by the one and only J.A. Peter, author, fantasy aficionado, and self-proclaimed oddball. Welcome back.”
Thanks for having me again, Ajay. Happy to be here!
“Let’s dive right in. So, how much research do you do for your books?”
Decades worth of research have inspired what I created.
“Wow. That’s dedication. I’m guessing you’ve got books and tabs open from here to eternity?”
You wouldn’t be wrong.
“Now, what’s your favorite genre to write and why?”
Traditional, dark, and high fantasy. I'm a lover of all things dragons and wizards.
“Respect. Now, describe yourself in just one word?”
Odd.
“And proud of it, I hope!”
Always.
“What was one of the most surprising things you learned while creating your books?”
I thought it would be so much harder.
“That’s refreshing! A rare answer, honestly and I have to agree. So, does writing energize or exhaust you?”
It really depends. The first two books were fire, but the third one is taxing.
“The dreaded third... I can absolutely relate to that. How do you deal with writer’s block?”
I’ve never experienced writer’s block.
“Never? That’s your superpower right there.”
I’ll take it!
“Alright, a little detour. Favourite ’90s or early 2000s song?”
From the '90s, "Broken Hearted Savior" by Big Head Todd and the Monsters. As for the 2000s... I’ve got nothing.
“Classic pick. Now, where do you draw your inspiration from?”
My dad.
“That’s beautiful. How do you handle criticism?”
Very well.
“Strong and steady. Now let’s get weird, you’re on death row. What’s your last meal?”
Burger, medium well, mayo, onions, and white American cheese. Pickle on the side. And a 32 oz chocolate milkshake so when they zap me, I mark the chair!
“That is... legendary. I'm literally PMSL. You’ll go out in a blaze of dairy glory. How do you prioritize your tasks?
From greatest importance to least important.
“Straightforward and effective. What inspired you to write?”
My third grade teacher and my favorite author, Stan Nicholls.
“How important are book reviews to you?”
I love them! I really enjoy reading what people think.
“That’s the spirit. So, what’s your writing routine?”
I write whenever I want.
“The dream. If you could be any animal, what would it be?”
Komodo dragon... because reasons.
“Mysterious and lethal. Love it. What’s your favorite motivational phrase?”
Life’s a garden, dig it!
“Joe Dirt vibes intensify. What advice would you give to aspiring writers?”
Books don’t write themselves. Better get to work.
“Amen. Finally, what have been the most rewarding and challenging aspects of self-publishing and how have you handled them?”
The most rewarding aspects, by far, are the readers. I completed my first book tour in March and I can’t tell you enough how much that tour solidified my belief that writing is my calling. As for the challenges—finances, hands down. I’m a produce clerk at a local grocery chain. Self-publishing is very, very expensive. I haven’t overcome this challenge yet.
“That’s honest and real and I respect that so much. A huge thank you to J.A. Peter for joining me today and sharing such a fun, honest glimpse into your world. Komodo dragons, chocolate milkshakes, and all.
